Point Barrow shows her class in 2025 Red Roses Stakes
Point Barrow added her name to the growing list of star prospects from the Anthony and Sam Freedman yard after a sparkling victory in the Red Roses Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.
The win follows the stable’s triumph with Tentyris in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, with that colt set to line up against the older sprinters in the VRC Champions Sprint this weekend.
Under a patient Daniel Stackhouse ride, Point Barrow exploded late to claim Inkaruna by 1¼ lengths, with Miss Freelove finishing third. A post-race protest from the fourth-placed runner was dismissed.
Freedman said the filly has the natural ability to reach Group 1 level but is still learning how to conserve her energy.
“She wanted to over-race early, but when she relaxes she has an outstanding finish,” he said.
The victory was emotional for owner-breeder Janice McKenna, whose late husband Colin was widely admired in the racing community. Their farm produced this year’s Melbourne Cup winner Half Yours.
“Janice being here means a lot,” Freedman said. “Colin’s legacy is everywhere — he’d be smiling today.”
Point Barrow is likely to head to the paddock before being aimed at Group racing next autumn, with the Robert Sangster Stakes among options.
