Wet no concern for Via Sistina in 2025 Champions Stakes
Via Sistina’s record under Chris Waller is nothing short of extraordinary: 10 Group 1 wins, four placings, and just one forgivable defeat in unique conditions.
The mare now returns to Flemington seeking another Champions Stakes (2000m) title to close out Melbourne Cup week.
Rain is forecast, but Waller said the mare has repeatedly proven herself on affected surfaces.
“The day she failed was the hailstorm day,” Waller said. “Otherwise, she’s proven in the wet time and again.”
The Champions Stakes comes two weeks after her second Cox Plate success.
“She doesn’t need hard training between runs,” Waller said. “She’s naturally fit and thrives when the pressure goes on.”
He expects Saturday’s race to be run at a speed that suits her pattern.
“At Flemington over 2000, they build into it. That’s ideal.”
Hong Kong remains an option, but the autumn could take priority.
Stablemate Kovalica also lines up and Waller believes he is ready to peak.
“He’s improving and getting to his right trip now. Fresh horses often run big races this week.”
