Melham makes even bigger mark on 2025 Melbourne Cup Week
Jamie Melham’s unforgettable week continued on Champions Day, where she added two more feature victories at Flemington to her Melbourne Cup triumph.
Melham first combined with Peter Snowden to win the Listed Fisher Stakes aboard Need Some Luck, before returning to partner Sunset Park to victory in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) for Brad Widdup.
The jockey admitted the wave of emotion had yet to slow.
“It still feels very surreal,” Melham said.
“I’ve had a lovely few days sharing the moment with my family. I think next week will be when it all sinks in.”
Sunset Park ($17) produced a bold on-speed performance, reversing the form from her Moonee Valley run to defeat She’s A Hustler by 1-1/4 lengths.
Widdup said the mare’s stamina and pedigree were coming to the fore.
“She’s got a deep staying pedigree and she’s racing like a mare who will keep improving,” he said.
Earlier, Need Some Luck stamped himself as a horse to follow with a strong win in the Fisher Stakes.
“He’s got talent, and today he showed it,” Snowden said.
Need Some Luck ($7) defeated De Bergerac ($7.50) with Big Swinger ($2.90) back in third.
