Via Sistina again too good in 2025 Champions Stakes
Via Sistina reaffirmed her status as one of racing’s modern greats, claiming her 12th Group 1 win with a dominant performance in the Champions Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.
Handling the rain-affected going with ease, James McDonald positioned the superstar mare perfectly before releasing her with clear air in the straight.
The $1.80 favourite surged clear to score by 2-3/4 lengths over Zambardo ($14), with Tom Kitten ($10) edging out Pier ($7.50) for third honours.
Coming off another historic win in the W S Cox Plate, trainer Chris Waller said watching Via Sistina at her peak remained special.
“She was fantastic. James didn’t rush, kept her comfortable, and she was very strong late,” Waller said.
Waller also acknowledged the role of Yu Long Investments in her journey.
“They’ve given racing fans another hero to follow.”
The result also marked the 50th Group 1 win together for Waller and McDonald.
McDonald said her legacy is secure.
“She sits alongside some of the greats. She’s been an incredible mare for a long time.”
