Bjorn Baker with strong hand in 2025 The Hunter
This year’s Group 2 The Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle carries extra intrigue, thanks in part to last year’s winner Briasa going on to claim Group 1 success soon after.
Trainer Bjorn Baker hopes his pair Iowna Merc and Robusto can step up, even if he concedes neither has the same profile as Briasa just yet.
Iowna Merc has been a consistent performer throughout 2025, adding three victories to his record including a Group 2 win and earning placings in several key sprint features. His last appearance in the Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) however, saw him finish last.
“Iowna Merc never fired on the track last time but he’s in good order,” Baker said.
“He just didn’t go at all, he didn’t fire, so I think we just press on.”
Robusto, meanwhile, resumes after being aimed towards his ultimate target — the Group 2 The Ingham (1600m). Since joining Baker from Chris Waller, he has amassed over $1.5 million in prize money.
“Robusto’s definitely well, he’s going to be first up and try and aim towards The Ingham,” Baker said.
“He’s not out of it because he’s got some good form, although I think he probably takes a run or two to get to his best.”
The pair share topweight of 59kg and are currently rated $15 (Iowna Merc) and $13 (Robusto) in early markets.
