Lees hoping for good Time in 2025 The Gong

Kris Lees will confirm his final representation in the $1 million The Gong by tomorrow, but he has already locked in Tavi Time as a definite runner despite a problematic barrier.
Tavi Time has drawn gate 16, with stablemate Loch Eagle even wider in 18 and also nominated for the Mooloolaba Cup (1600m) on Saturday.
Lees will weigh up both race options before committing Loch Eagle, but says Tavi Time heads to the Group 3 Gong (1600m) well, needing only some luck from the outside.
“Awkward gates, but there is a forecast for a bit of rain, so you never know with Kembla,” Lees said.
“It has always been the plan, the Big Dance into this race with Tavi Time.
“He has come on well, and he didn’t have a great deal of luck in the Big Dance.”
Tavi Time was balloted out of the Gong last spring and finished third in the consolation event, but after wins in the Scone Cup and Summer Cup, he now finds himself safely in the field.
He has been close-up in all three starts this spring, including his effort in the Big Dance (1600m) where he was just behind Gringotts after being held up at vital stages.
Lees believes the gelding’s chances revolve around race tempo and uninterrupted running room.
“I’d suggest tempo and a nice, smooth run,” he said.
“Big fields, that doesn’t always happen, but if he can get the right set-up, he is always effective.”
Lord Of Biscay was another Gong entry but missed the field and instead contests the benchmark 88, much like Tavi Time did last year.
From a favourable draw, Lees is upbeat about his prospects.
“He didn’t make the field for the Gong, but that race looks a nice option for him,” Lees said.
“He’s got a nice gate, and he has been knocking on the door for a win.”
