Sweltering burns her rivals at Canterbury races

An adjusted preparation has ultimately paid off, with Sweltering finally breaking through for her maiden success.

One of the shortest-priced Sydney favourites in recent memory, Sweltering brushed aside the challenges of a mid-prep reshuffle to score emphatically and justify the strong market support.

A Group 1 placegetter in the Australasian Oaks earlier this season, she jumped a $1.12 chance in Wednesday’s Irresistible Pools And Spas Plate (1900m) and lived up to it, cruising clear for a 3-3/4 length win under Tommy Berry.

That performance followed her second placing behind Verona Rose in the Inglis Bracelet (1600m) on VRC Oaks Day — a race she was never initially meant to contest.

Assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth detailed how the original target, the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m), was ruled out due to an obscure eligibility condition.

“All the way through we were going to the Matriarch,” Duckworth said.

“But the ruling in Victoria is you can’t race a maiden grade horse in a Matriarch, so on that basis they rejected our nomination.

“She was already down there and an Inglis purchase, so she was qualified for the Inglis Bracelet on the Thursday, which she ran well in.

“But she had always been prepped for that 2000-metre journey, and she got that today.”

Plans now turn to a break before the Sydney autumn features.

“Onwards and upwards from here. She is obviously a classy mare already with black type,” Duckworth said.

“That might just do her, and we worry about the autumn. But I will let Chris make the call.”

Also on the card, Tulloch Lodge’s promising three-year-old Supermassive earned himself a Gold Coast trip for the Magic Millions carnival with a strong win.
