Jockey Ryan Maloney cleans up at Doomben races

Ryan Maloney enjoyed one of his most successful afternoons at Doomben on Saturday, posting four winners including both Listed races worth $160,000 apiece.
The Victorian-born hoop piloted $2.50 favourite Midnight In Tokyo to victory in the Tattersall’s Classic (1200m) before turning the tables with a fighting win aboard Rockribbed in the Recognition Stakes.
Rockribbed, a $7.50 chance, scraped in by a nose over stablemate Boomtown Boss, who started $3.20 but was stopped in his tracks by interference 150 metres from home — a pivotal moment in the finish.
“I’ve had a bit of luck going my way with a few of the boys being on the sidelines and I was the lucky one to pick up the, well, not scraps by any means,” Maloney said of his four-win haul.
The gelding erased memories of his ninth-place effort in the Keith Noud Classic first-up, with Maloney noting that despite favourable breaks, his mount still had to overcome obstacles.
“He began really nicely, just trucked into the straight and I didn’t have any options bar to go back to the inside, but he was too good,” he said.
Maloney was full of praise for Midnight In Tokyo, who snapped an 18-month winless spell with a dominant 1-3/4-length performance over Lonhro’s Queen under the care of Annabel and Rob Archibald.
“We controlled it and as soon as I released the brakes at the top of the straight I was basically just a passenger and lucky enough to be on her.”
Her win was Maloney’s second for the Archibald stable after Space Tracker ($4), having earlier begun the day with a victory aboard Silver Wedding ($1.90) for Ciaron Maher.
With regular rival Ben Thompson unavailable, Maloney extended his lead in the Brisbane Metropolitan Jockeys’ Premiership to eight wins, holding a 40-32 advantage.
