Experience key for Widdup youngster in the 2025 Inglis Nursery

Trainer Brad Widdup is hopeful that Internal Affairs’ debut experience and a kinder barrier draw can set him up for a breakthrough win in the Listed Inglis Nursery at Randwick.

The well-credentialed son of Home Affairs cost $440,000, making him the second-highest priced yearling in Saturday’s 1000m race, behind fellow newcomer Vatican, a $1.2 million purchase.

Internal Affairs debuted last month and battled on strongly for fourth behind Fireball after being forced to work from a wide alley.

Widdup briefly weighed up whether to send him for a break but, after the colt continued to thrive, chose instead to press on toward the Nursery.

“I thought, do I tip him out or just tick him over for this race to see how he comes through? He has come through really well, so it was a bit of a no-brainer to go around,” Widdup said.

“It’s good prizemoney, not a big field. He has well and truly got enough ability.”

Barrier three gives Internal Affairs the chance to settle prominently, although Widdup wants jockey Tom Sherry to ensure he finds cover in the run.

With six of the eleven runners making their first appearances, Widdup believes his colt’s experience could be a telling factor.

“He is a pretty straightforward animal. He would have learned a lot the other day,” Widdup said.

“Unless you get something out of the box that is very good, race experience always helps.”

The stable is also represented at Randwick by Hyperbolic, who lines up in the In Memory of Sam Kavanagh Handicap (1600m). Widdup is optimistic she can build on her last-start win.

“We have been very patient with her, and now she is at this age, she should be cherry-ripe to go through her grades,” he said.

“She’s a nice mare and I’m more than hopeful that she can go on with it.”

A four-time winner from twelve starts, Hyperbolic again has the services of jockey Tommy Berry after their recent Rosehill victory.
