Yorkshire out to make a summer statement in 2025 The Ingham

Posted by RS NewsWire at 5:33pm on December 12th

John O’Shea’s first major breakthrough as a solo trainer came 25 years ago when Grey And Gold captured the Villiers Stakes.

He added another victory with On A High and later won the race again in its rebranded form as The Ingham (1600m) in 2022 with Kirwin’s Lane.

Now a decorated horseman with 32 Group 1 wins — three secured since partnering with Tom Charlton — O’Shea returns to Randwick on Saturday chasing a fourth victory in the summer feature.

“Obviously, a lot of water has gone under the bridge, but it’s a race that has always been very dear to me and let’s hope we can be competitive again,” O’Shea said.

He credits Charlton’s youthful drive as a valuable addition to the stable, mirroring his long-time commitment to fostering emerging talent.

“I think it’s always important to embrace youth,” O’Shea said.

“A lot of the people we have working for us are young and enthusiastic and Tom is an extension of that.

“We complement each other… Tom excels in certain areas, and I bring experience in dealing with the tougher parts of the job.”

Their contender Yorkshire, a rising star, has won seven of 10 and arrives after bouncing back to win the Festival Stakes (1500m).

O’Shea believes the lightly weighted gelding is one of the most talented runners he has brought to the race.

“He is probably the most accomplished horse we’ve run in it, apart from It’s Somewhat but It’s Somewhat had 59 kilos,” he said.

“This horse has ended up very well weighted (53kg) and probably has the best record of any horse we’ve run in it.”

He expects a strong contest, noting the calibre of the opposition.

“Gringotts would be competitive in any Doncaster Mile. Sabaj looks to have great form. Estadio Mestalla has great form. There’s a Caulfield Cup winner (Duke De Sessa) in there. It’s a pretty strong race.”

Early betting has seen Yorkshire firm to $4.80, while Gringotts has drifted after a wide draw.
