Chris Waller wins The Lakes again

Chris Waller has again dominated Wyong’s January showpiece, with Chica Mojito taking out the $500,000 Lakes Mile.

Waller claimed the inaugural running of the 1600-metre event in 2025 with Waterford and continued that trend as Chica Mojito ($17) secured only the second win of her career from 24 starts.

With 12 placings also to her name, including a luckless third in the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf (1600m) at Gosford late last month, the five-year-old’s record has long hinted at a result like this.

“She got a bit of traffic in the home straight but she’s been crying out for a win for a long time,” stable representative Darren Beadman said.

“She got the conditions right today. A good fast speed and presented well today.

“It was a good confident ride by Andy (Adkins).”

Chica Mojito proved too strong, winning by two lengths from Mare Of Mt Buller ($14), with Gallant Star ($8.50) a further three-quarters of a length away in third.

Beadman said Mare Of Mt Buller also performed admirably, but noted Adkins’ ride was the difference.

Know Thyself ($2.35) was sent out favourite but endured traffic problems in the straight and was unable to run on into a placing.

Punters found plenty of value through major betting platforms for the Lakes Mile, one of the standout races of the Wyong season.

Chica Mojito had been earmarked for the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale last May before being withdrawn and has since missed the placings only once.
