Waving the Wand over another win

Posted by RS NewsWire at 2:15pm on January 15th

After taking time to find his feet early in his career, Six Of Wands is now hitting his stride and will attempt to make it three wins in a row when he lines up at Ipswich on Thursday.

The Gordon’s Gin Benchmark 58 Handicap (1350m) presents another suitable stepping stone as connections look to keep the gelding climbing steadily through the grades.

Trainer Matt Hoysted said barrier 10 adds a layer of difficulty but is not overly concerned given the Ipswich configuration.

“She’s racing in good form but the gate has made things a bit tricky,” Hoysted said.

“She’s got good gate speed and the 1350m at Ipswich is a beautiful start as she has the whole back straight to work across.”

The Zousain four-year-old scored a determined win over the same track and distance last start, earning a Racing and Sports rating of 63, and will carry 62.5kg, reduced by apprentice Fiona Sandkuhl’s 2kg claim.

“It will all depend on how much work he’s made to do early but it is a nice progressional race and he does get in well enough with Fiona’s claim,” Hoysted said.

“He’s coping with his racing at the moment well and being able to stay in this grade before we go to higher competition.”

Betting markets for the Ipswich event are available through trusted betting providers ahead of Thursday’s meeting.

Six Of Wands firmed slightly into $9.50, while Tony Gollan-trained Land Bank was also well supported, trimming into $1.90.

The duo are the only runners under double-figure odds in the field of 15 plus emergencies.
