Future History too strong in the 2026 January Cup

Posted by RS NewsWire at 6:33pm on January 17th

Future History showed his class and toughness when landing the $200,000 Listed January Cup at Rosehill, giving Ciaron Maher another feature race success.

The eight-year-old almost didn’t take his place in the race after heavy rain downgraded the track, but connections elected to press on despite concerns about the conditions.

Ridden positively by Nash Rawiller, Future History controlled the race from the front and proved too strong late, defeating Touristic by three-quarters of a length with Imperialist finishing third.

Rawiller’s decision to stick close to the rail proved pivotal as the surface deteriorated throughout the race.

Stable representative Sam Fitzgerald said the jockey’s experience was invaluable.

“We left it up to Nash to make the calls,” Fitzgerald said.

“He judged it perfectly and gave the horse every chance.”

The victory came off the back of a strong staying win at Flemington, with Maher opting to drop the gelding back in trip.

“It was a late call to run and even later to stay in the race,” Fitzgerald said.

“But his fitness and toughness really stood out.”

Rawiller said Future History felt comfortable throughout the contest.

“He travelled beautifully and handled the ground well,” he said.

Future History is expected to head next to the Listed Australia Day Cup later this month.
