Torque To Be Sure breaks maiden in 2026 Magic Millions Guineas, survives protest

Torque To Be Sure finally lived up to his promise with a breakthrough victory in the $3 million Magic Millions 3yo Guineas, though his success came with a nervous wait in the stewards’ room.
The Matthew Dunn-trained gelding drifted under pressure in the closing stages, bumping race favourite Ninja as the pair fought out the finish.
Despite objections from jockey Tommy Berry and trainer Michael Freedman, stewards ruled the interference insufficient to overturn the result, with the margin holding at three-quarters of a length.
It was a deserved breakthrough for Torque To Be Sure, who had previously recorded five placings from 11 starts before finally breaking through.
Dunn said the relief was immediate once the protest was dismissed.
“I think we had a fair margin,” he said.
Melham admitted the colt was still learning but showed his ability when it mattered.
“He’s not an easy horse to ride,” Melham said.
“He shifted a little but he was strong late and the back-up really helped him over the 1400 metres.”
“The talent’s always been there — it’s good to see him put it together on a big stage.”
The $260,000 Magic Millions purchase now boasts prizemoney of $1.9 million following the victory.
Strong interest in the race was reflected across leading online wagering platforms throughout the day.
