Kluske opts for tougher test with Gold Spirit in Morphettville sprint

While Gold Spirit could target less challenging events than his upcoming assignment at Morphettville this Saturday, trainer Grant Kluske finds merit in raising the promising speedster in class.
This four-year-old prepares for outing number two this season in the $55,000 Sportsbet Same Race Multi BM72 Handicap, spanning 1000 metres on Parks track.
He was eligible for the 0-62 affair over the same distance that trails the BM72, but Kluske appreciates the scenario for his charge despite barrier two from the outside in a field of 10.
"I decided to go with the higher-class race mainly because the horses in it," Kluske said.
"He likes it up forward, but I think it's going to be a bit of a fight up front and will take a sit.
"He doesn't have to be up there (leading), so I'm more than happy going into it."
Gold Spirit would have been joint topweight in the following race, but scales 54kg in the BM72 with Brooke King's 3kg deduction.
The daughter of Turffontein had King in the irons for his first-up fourth at Morphettville January 31, defeated by barely more than a length.
Conducted under 0-70 ratings, Saturday's race boasts Been Our Angel, Mintulee and Nextonixs at 68 as leading weights, prompting Kluske to deem it milder than potential and use it to plot the campaign ahead.
"This will only be his second start this time in, but he's got to step up the mark in this one," Kluske said.
"It's a benchmark 72, but there's nothing in it rated 69 (or above), so we're more than happy.
"He's a very good horse, very professional in everything he does and I'm feeling really happy with him."
