Walker team warming to Geegees Mistruth ahead of Caulfield feature

Mark Walker's Cranbourne stable has developed an increasing fondness for Geegees Mistruth the longer she has been in their care.

The four-year-old, bred in Tasmania, transferred to the Walker outfit last spring following preparation by Stuart Gandy.

With six successes in 15 races, Geegees Mistruth remains without a mainland triumph, but hopes are high for success in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield this Saturday.

Ben Gleeson, assistant trainer, explained the team's approach to keep the mare fresh for the contest.

He added that the sub-maximum field size is advantageous for Geegees Mistruth.

In three starts for Walker, the mare has filled a placing spot every time.

Her current campaign began with third place over 1000m at Caulfield on January 24, after which she returned to trials, winning one on February 9.

"She trialled up impressively and we've intentionally gone a month between runs, second-up, which her record is two wins, two seconds," Gleeson said.

"She flies with that little bit of freshness in her.

"She couldn't have trialled any better and her gallop on Tuesday was excellent.

"The less than capacity field suits as she can find trouble in the run, but the extra 100 metres is good and hopefully those gaps come easier for her."

According to Gleeson, while Geegees Mistruth has been difficult to prepare, the stable's familiarity with her has strengthened over time.

"We've tried a few different things with her training, and we think that it's working," Gleeson said.

"She's a trick to train, but we love her, and we think we've got the best of her now and hopefully on Saturday she shows it."
