Liverpool City Cup starts Yorkshire's path to Doncaster Mile

Heart arrhythmia derailed Yorkshire's early plans last preparation, but trainers were already holding back enthusiasm beforehand.

Expectations rise higher now as the developing miler makes his comeback in the Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Coming back after nine months idle, Yorkshire debuted last time in The Hunter (1300m); this upcoming run follows just 10 weeks after his December 13 conquest of The Ingham (1600m).

"He would be more forward than that race because he was coming off a long lay-off, where he's only had a short let-up off the Ingham," co-trainer Tom Charlton said.

"He will be more forward by design, but he will have a bit of improvement to come still."

Charlton and partner John O'Shea have nurtured the five-year-old with patience, and his form line shows a rapidly improving contender.

Boasting eight triumphs in 11 appearances, he recovered from The Hunter setback to secure consecutive successes in the Festival Stakes (1500m) and Ingham, proof of his exceptional qualities.

"He's as tough as anything and just thrives on his work and racing," Charlton said.

"He will most likely go to the Liverpool City Cup on Saturday. That will be his first-up run, and then probably the Ajax Stakes and Doncaster Mile."

His Ingham win granted Yorkshire a ballot-free entry to the Doncaster Mile (1600m), setting up a possible encounter with yardmate Linebacker if he qualifies.

Linebacker, who captured the Randwick Guineas at three, heads towards the mile highlight differently, via the Canterbury Stakes followed by the George Ryder Stakes (1500m).

Impressing with a victory in Thursday's Randwick trial, he gears up for the Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick in two Saturdays' time.
