2000m trip ideal for Tom Kitten's next outing

Tom Kitten has earned his reputation as one of the nation's elite milers through victories in multiple All-Star Mile events, yet this coming weekend offers him a platform to reaffirm his class at 2000m.
The gelding, now five, seeks his first success over the distance post his Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes conquest in October 2023, lining up in the $2 million Australian Cup at Flemington.
Out of former European dash specialist Harry Angel, the horse notched runner-up finishes in the previous year's Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Champions Stakes, both claimed by Via Sistina, in his last couple of 2000m efforts, with co-trainer Sam Freedman confident the extra journey from the All-Star Mile suits him well.
"He's in good form and at 2000 metres he might be slightly more effective than the mile," Freedman, who trains in partnership with his father Anthony, said.
"He bounced out of the (last) run really well, so he's going to be ready to go next week.
"Three weeks between runs suits and his fitness is good."
Victory here would mark a hat-trick of wins this campaign for Tom Kitten in the Australian Cup, building on his Group 3 Heffernan Stakes (1400m) score and subsequent All-Star Mile repeat at Flemington on March 7.
The homebred for Godolphin boasts eight triumphs from 31 starts, alongside eight more placings, banking just over $7.5 million in earnings.
Among the 16 declarations for the Australian Cup, Tom Kitten faces notable challengers including Pride Of Jenni, Birdman and titleholder Light Infantry Man.
