Kym Davison from Albury secures debut metro triumph at Randwick

Trainer Kym Davison out of Albury marked his premiere metropolitan success on a key date in the Sydney autumn carnival, attaining it in a somewhat unplanned manner.

He had targeted running his rising three-year-old Autumn Break in the $1 million Country Championships Final (1400m), but the runner missed the cut.

As an emergency entrant instead, and needing to be present in Sydney should a horse withdraw, Davison chose to supplement for the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) as a contingency.

"First city winner, so not a bad one to crack the ice with," Davison said.

"I was hoping to be in the next race, but great consolation.

"I saw this race and said, 'well, we're going up there anyway, so we'll go and have a throw at the stumps'."

Not just did Autumn Break ($8) perform admirably, he narrowly defeated the Chris Waller runner Kilman ($31), who dominated from the front until the wire, with Matias ($6.50) just a short head further behind in third place.

This victory shone as a highlight during challenging circumstances for the Davisons, following the death of Kym's brother from illness last week.

"It's been a hard week. We lost my brother a week ago," he said.

"He had been unwell for a while. But you've got to pick yourself up."

Operating with eight horses at his Albury base, Davison plans to rest Autumn Break before aiming him at an early preparation for The Kosciuszko (1200m) come October.

"The Kosciuszko, he'd go alright in that," he said.

"His first start was over 1200, and he should have won that Highway (Handicap) here, that was 1200 first-up, so we'll try to push onto that if we can."
