Beskar's Randwick romp signals Queensland intentions

For the rising three-year-old gelding Beskar, Anthony and Sam Freedman have found success through minimal interference, a strategy paying off handsomely in competition.

Securing successive triumphs, the gelding controlled the race wire-to-wire in Saturday's Listed South Pacific Classic (1400m) at Randwick, hinting at a Brisbane winter carnival foray.

That success built on a shock win in the Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) last time out, as Beskar bounced back strongly from a subpar spring campaign.

"He's become genuine, this horse," Anthony Freedman said.

"He has always shown us really good ability. He just lost his way and needed gelding, and we've changed up a lot with him. We hardly work him, and it's working for him.

"He can sustain a long gallop. It opens up some options for him at 1400 now."

Damian Lane let Beskar stride on freely ($5.50), and he quickened impressively down the straight, holding off runner-up Mareth ($13) by a short head, the filly mounting a fierce chase but unable to catch him.

Regal Award ($1.90) filled third spot, 1-1/4 lengths behind the winner.

According to Freedman, leading wasn't the original tactic, yet Lane rolled with the gelding's strong start.

"He's a horse where, the more you tell him to do something he doesn't want to do, he tends to work against you," Lane said.

"When he was free flowing I just went with him and lucky he held on."

Beskar, in only his third run of the preparation after Saturday, is primed for Brisbane's three-year-old highlights.

"He is pretty lightly raced, and he handles this direction so that's probably the logical step," Freedman said.
