Dual Freedman assault set for Robert Sangster Stakes

Anthony and Sam Freedmans stable is poised to chase a prominent Adelaide sprint prize with a pair of entrants for the inaugural occasion.

The duo of Ameena and Point Barrow will carry the father-and-son trainers colours in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) scheduled at Morphettville on Saturday.

The Freedman family has enjoyed success in the race post its 2005 promotion to Group 1, including Lee Freedmans hat-trick via Alinghi that year, then Ellicorsam and Universal Queen, and Anthonys Shoals win in 2018.

Now Sam Freedman seeks to join that legacy, viewing both of his quick types as genuine contenders.

Point Barrow holds early favouritism at $4.60, while Ameena lurks at $34 in betting.

According to Freedman, Point Barrow hasnt put a foot wrong this time in and shares stylistic traits with Shoals, who surged late to secure her Sangster triumph.

"This has been a target race for the whole prep," Freedman said.

"She's coming in with the strongest form and due to circumstances in the Oakleigh Plate, we didn't see her at her best, but she put up a great run last start.

"Maybe it wasn't a great field, maybe she got the right run throughout, but they've still got to go out and do it.

"Shoals won this race a few years ago and had a better CV than Point Barrow but had a similar sort of racing style where she got back and swooped down the middle.

"I think for a three-year-old filly, I wouldn't go swapping her with any that are in there."

Although entered for a Sandown jump-out last week, Point Barrow skipped the tougher effort per Freedman.

She instead tackled a solid piece of work at Mornington the prior Saturday on the proper surface, leaving her co-trainer satisfied.

First-up into the elite sprint, Ameena resumes post-spring with four jump-outs in the bank.

Mirroring last years approach, the Freedmans saw Ameena notch runner-up in the Sangster before a fourth in The Goodwood.

"She's going in fresh," Freedman said.

"She ran brilliantly in the race last year fresh. She should have nearly won, so we'll follow the same path.

"There is the Goodwood a fortnight later for both them if you have a hard luck story or they pull up well, so there is the option to do that, but I don't think they will be pushing on to Queensland as this is very much a target race for them."
