Bangkok Hottie set for spell before eyeing Princess Series

David Payne opted to give Bangkok Hottie an extra outing to grab Sydney Saturday stakes ahead of her extensive spring plans, resulting in a resounding triumph for the filly at Randwick.

Although Payne initially intended to retire the filly to the paddock after her midweek maiden conquest at Warwick Farm, owner-breeder and veteran client John Thompson convinced him to push forward one more time.

"I was going to put her out and John said to me, \"David, give her another run. Try to get some more stakes\",\" Payne said.

\"She can go out now. She is a very good filly.

\"The Princess Series for the fillies (will be the goal). She'll get a mile on her ear, so we'll aim her for that.\"

Under jockey Ash Morgan, Bangkok Hottie firmed late into $3.90 favourite status, sitting on the pace before unleashing a powerful finish to win Saturday's HMAS Sydney Handicap (1100m) by 2-1/4 lengths ahead of newcomer Keen To Exceed ($17) and Extremely Tempted ($4) third, half a length behind.

With his compact stable setup, Payne is excited about unearthing a prospect with black-type aspirations.

\"Nobody wanted to ride her today. They will all be wanting to ride her now,\" he said.

\"She's special. She is bombproof too, and she's got a turn of foot.

\"We don't get many horses. We've only got twenty, so now we can at least take them on again.\"

The partnership between Thompson and Payne has yielded results before, notably with 2023 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes winner Navajo Peak.

August sees the start of the four-leg Princess Series with the Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m), building to the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m).
