Waller eyes Sun God's return in Luskin Star Stakes at Scone

For the upcoming two-day event at Scone, Chris Waller plans a substantial team, but the resuming Sun God stands out as the one he's particularly eager to watch in action.

Among as many as 18 horses from the top trainer, the five-year-old begins his fresh preparation in Saturday's Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m).

The import from Europe has notched three wins in 14 Australian races, most recently prevailing at a mile on Randwick in February, which yielded important observations for his handlers.

Sun God captured a 2400m contest in England, yet Waller reckons his strengths in Aussie racing lie elsewhere, with evidence pointing to sprints suiting him more.

"Sun God, I'm looking forward to him resuming," Waller said.

"Last 'prep', we learned that a mile sees him out. It will be interesting to see how he runs fresh, and he has drawn well."

With a previous first-up victory to his name, Sun God jumps from gate two amid 16 runners and four reserves.

Captain Furai, in good form, will also fly the Waller flag in the sprint, while Waterford is entered for both Friday's Scone Cup (1600m) and the weekend, though the Cup appears his destination.

"Captain Furai, he has a slightly tricky draw (barrier 10) but gee, he's racing consistently," Waller said.

"He needs luck from that draw, but he has trained on really well. He'll be four weeks between runs so he's nice and fresh.

"Waterford will most likely run in the Cup. That's our preference."

Conversely, the trainer prefers the Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) on Saturday for Chica Mojito over the Cup, given her draw of 12 in the fillies and mares race versus 18 elsewhere.

Waller emphasises that fortune during races will be vital come Saturday, considering nearly all 10 races are oversubscribed.

"They're big fields and it's a good, fair track, but you need a bit of luck," he said.

Just the Midway Handicap (1700m) falls short of full strength, accommodating 15 from 16 possible starters.
