Joint Venture earns carnival ticket with Rosehill triumph

A late-developing two-year-old, Joint Venture, is now in contention for the initial three-year-old feature races after securing a crucial win at Rosehill.

The impeccably bred son of I Am Invincible, a $625,000 yearling acquisition for the Newgate stallions syndicate, displayed significant progress from his debut second at Wyong, asserting his class in Saturday's Kia Ora Bloodlines to Headlines Handicap (1200m).

Trainer Chris Waller commented that Joint Venture is still refining his racing manners, but the win as a juvenile will be a significant boost to his credentials, setting a strong stage for potential rises in competition.

"It's also a good time of year to give a horse like him confidence," Waller remarked. "You can see how much he does wrong at the start and in the straight. You can't get confidence if they're in a tough race doing things wrong, but at this time of year they can."

The conditioner will closely observe Joint Venture's post-race condition following Saturday's event, but he is prepared to advance the colt against more seasoned opponents in the upcoming weeks, provided the horse continues to impress.

"You can take on the better three-year-olds with a bit of fitness, and you can be competitive," Waller added. "We'd be pushing on, I'd say. He won't get over too far (in journey), too quickly, but we will concentrate over the next few weeks on getting his ring craft right. If we get that right, there is a lot of improvement to come."

Partnered by Sam Clipperton, Joint Venture ($8.50) triumphed by three-quarters of a length from Gatineau ($6.50), who fought on gamely after setting the pace, with the well-backed Seeiaye ($2.30 favourite) securing third place. Joint Venture paid $8.50 with leading betting apps Australia.
