Cosmic Crusader set for Victorian debut in Bletchingly Stakes

Trainer Andrea Leek is yet to pinpoint the exact spring campaign for Cosmic Crusader, but she is anticipating his racecourse return this Saturday.

The Group 1-winning Western Australian gelding is scheduled to make his Victorian racing debut in the $200,000 Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes, a 1200m contest at Caulfield.

This five-year-old entire, owned by Bob and Sandra Peters, transitioned to Leek's stable from Perth's leading conditioner Michael Grantham. Grantham was responsible for preparing Cosmic Crusader to victory in the Northerly Stakes last year, and Leek has expressed her satisfaction with the horse's adjustment to Victorian racing conditions.

"I think he loves it," Leek shared. "He seems very happy and we're just looking forward to seeing what he can do on Saturday. It's a bit short of his (best) distance, but you've got to start somewhere and it just looked like a nice starting point."

Leek conveyed that a significant spring objective has not yet been established for the horse, who arrived in Victoria with a reputation as WA's foremost galloper, and Peters is keen to gauge his performance this weekend.

The son of Maurice was unable to gain entry into Perth's premier race, the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m), but went on to win the Listed Carbine Club Stakes (1400m) convincingly on the same program. He followed this with a triumph in the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) on December 6.

Seven days later, he competed over 1400m in the Group 3 Gold Rush, where he narrowly lost to the Victorian sprinter Rey Magnerio.

Cosmic Crusader's last run over 1200m was a winning one at Ascot in October 2024, marking his second victory at the trip from three attempts. He enters the Bletchingly Stakes having had one jumpout in Victoria, finishing second behind Pop Award at Caulfield on July 1.

"He had the one jumpout at Caulfield, just to give him a look at it," Leek commented. "I was really happy with it, very happy."

Cosmic Crusader was one of 13 horses nominated for the weight-for-age Bletchingly Stakes. Among the potential rivals are Monash Stakes winners Winnasedge and Recommendation (the 2024 winner), the talented Zou Sensation, and the Group 2-winning mare Miraval Rose.

Racegoers are anticipating the Bletchingly Stakes, with keen interest in how Cosmic Crusader performs first-up at the Caulfield track, a race that is attracting significant attention on online bookmakers.
