Beiwacht shows class in Warwick Farm trial for Waller

The highly-rated colt Beiwacht, a dual Group One victor, was a prominent figure in the initial trial at Warwick Farm on Tuesday, demonstrating impressive form to win the 900m heat.

This son of Bivouac, belonging to Godolphin, made the transition from three-year-old races to open-age competition in the Autumn, adding the prestigious All Aged Stakes to his earlier triumph in the Golden Rose Stakes.

Guided by jockey Nash Rawiller, Beiwacht led from start to finish in a time of 53.99 seconds, crossing the line ahead of the Spring Champion Stakes winner, Attica.

Trainer Chris Waller, who took charge of Beiwacht after James Cummings departed Godolphin for Hong Kong, conveyed his enthusiasm for the colt's prospects in the upcoming Spring racing season as a four-year-old.

"I'm looking forward to him," Waller stated to Racing And Sports. "He's a mature colt now. He's won a Golden Rose and we've worked out that he's a good high-pressure horse over 1400 (metres)."

"He's good enough to win over 1200, I'm sure, and as a mature four-year-old, I'm excited. He's beaten the older horses at three. He's won a Golden Rose in amazing time and with an amazing rating. He can really do it as a four-year-old."

Although Beiwacht has secured top-tier victories and is a promising stallion prospect, the Waller stable is highly motivated to achieve a Group One win with the often-discussed Angel Capital, who finished respectably in fifth place during the trial under the guidance of James McDonald.

Angel Capital has earned placings at Group One level on three occasions and experienced a particularly unlucky sixth in the All Aged Stakes, which was claimed by stablemate Beiwacht.

"This is his time," Waller commented on the Yulong-owned four-year-old. "I think 1400 metres is foolproof in terms of taking the way he races out of the equation where he gets back and he can still beat them over 1400. He'll probably resume him over 1200, but I haven't given up on thinking about he could even go first-up in a Memsie. The next few weeks will tell us a lot about our horses and where they're resuming."

Also competing in the trial were the Champagne Stakes winner Fireball and ATC Sires Produce winner Campione D'italia, who finished seventh and sixth respectively, and are likely contenders for the Golden Rose.
