Carnival horses trial at Rosehill, Savvy Hallie ready to impress

With Sydney's final Saturday metropolitan meeting for the season on the horizon, a fresh wave of carnival-bound horses are set to participate in barrier trials at Rosehill Gardens as they intensify their preparations for their seasonal comebacks.

Among the notable runners expected to feature in Friday's session are Australian Derby victor Green Spaces, the accomplished Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner Idle Flyer, and the talented Flight Stakes recipient Apocalyptic.

These three high-profile runners will compete in the opening 900m Group Trial. Joining them will be the promising filly Savvy Hallie, who delivered a tenacious performance when narrowly defeated by Everest runner-up Tempted in the prestigious Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m) in February.

Following her run in the Coolmore Classic (1500m) where she finished outside the placings against seasoned older mares, Savvy Hallie was sent for a spell. Trainer Brad Widdup determined that she had reached the culmination of her preparation and her preferred distance parameters.

"It was probably too far, and one run too many," Widdup explained.

"She is only starting to fill into herself now, so I still think the autumn next year might be her time. She's still developing, but she's done well this time in.

"We'll see what happens, but hopefully she can be our flag bearer."

Savvy Hallie will be partnered by her regular rider Nash Rawiller for the trial on Friday. The rising four-year-old mare is slated for another trial next month before her anticipated return at Randwick on August 22.

"She'll trial twice, then there's the Toy Show (Quality) and Show County (Quality) on the same day, so she'll probably head to one of them," Widdup added.

Stablemate Jedibeel, who finished second in The Galaxy, remains some distance from a racetrack return. He underwent a successful operation after his performance in The Quokka (1200m) at Ascot in April.

The horse was eased down in the concluding stages of the race, and subsequent veterinary examinations identified an elevated heart rate and cough, along with the presence of blood traces in his trachea.

"He had to have throat surgery after Perth, but he's not far off," Widdup noted.

"He has healed really well. Hopefully we will get him back late spring. We'll just get him fit and work it out from there."

Also among the notable entries for the Rosehill trials are Canonbury Stakes victor Hidrix and the filly Chilly Girl, who recorded a commanding win in the Widden Stakes before an unforeseen setback ruled her out of the autumn carnival.
