Brad Widdup uncertain of filly Satono Jasmine's ultimate potential after fourth straight win
Brad Widdup expressed his excitement for the future of Satono Jasmine, a filly who has now secured her fourth consecutive victory at Randwick, leaving the trainer questioning the extent of her capabilities.
Having commenced Satono Jasmine's racing campaign with modest expectations, Brad Widdup is now uncertain about the filly's ultimate potential after she achieved her fourth win in succession at Randwick.
In what is only her second racing season, Satono Jasmine transitioned smoothly into Saturday grade racing, unleashing a potent sprint from the back of the field to capture the B & K Group Australia Handicap (1800m) at Randwick.
"I don't know where it's coming from," stated Widdup, referring to the filly's impressive acceleration.
"I thought she could win a maiden and maybe a class one, but not many do what she is doing."
Satono Jasmine's success at Randwick followed a series of provincial victories and a midweek metropolitan win.
While the current racing period is off-season, achieving a four-win streak is a significant accomplishment, prompting Widdup to speculate on the future progression of the daughter of the Japanese sire Satono Aladdin.
"I really don't know. That stallion is a pretty good stallion, and she might be the one," Widdup admitted.
"She has come a long way, and she's got a bit to learn.
"We don't (know where her ceiling is). We'll give her a break and see what happens.
"I won't be charging into the spring now. I'll probably get her back for the early autumn and have a look, try to win a couple of races after Christmas and see where that leads to."
Chad Schofield, who has guided Satono Jasmine to three of her four victories, described the filly's latest performance as her most outstanding.
"That was her best one yet," Schofield said.
"I just let her travel, albeit on a slow speed, but geez, when I pulled her to the outside in the straight she accelerated hard and fast. Every time I ride her she has felt better."
Satono Jasmine ($3.80 favourite) crossed the line 1-1/4 lengths ahead of Horizons ($3.90), with the Victorian horse Oraqua ($12) finishing strongly for third, an additional long neck adrift.
