Apocalyptic's Trial Win Signals Spring Carnival Ambitions

The spring carnival looks set to feature some of the generation's brightest three-year-olds, with Apocalyptic, Green Spaces, and Savvy Hallie all displaying impressive form in barrier trials at Rosehill Gardens this morning.

Michael Freedman's charge, Apocalyptic, was guided to an effortless win in a competitive 900m heat, crossing the line in 55.57 seconds without being extended. Chilly Girl followed her home.

Apocalyptic, a filly who endured a break after a less-than-stellar autumn campaign, appears to have rediscovered her peak form. Last spring, she notched victories in the Group 2 Furious Stakes, Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes, and the prestigious Group 1 Flight Stakes.

"I'm really happy with Apocalyptic, she seems to be in great order,'' Freedman stated.

Her next outing will be in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality over 1100m at Royal Randwick in two weeks. Meanwhile, the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained Chilly Girl, a previous winner of the Widden Stakes, also showed considerable promise in her trial against seasoned performers.

The margin in Apocalyptic's trial was tight, with the first four finishers separated by half a length. Headwall secured third place, and Private Eye finished fourth, both exhibiting promising signs.

Headwall, a contender for The Everest, is on a rehabilitation path and is being prepared for a return in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Royal Randwick early next month. Private Eye, the veteran nine-year-old boasting almost $13 million in earnings, carries residual fitness from a winter campaign in Brisbane and is set to defend his title in the Group 2 Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 15.

"He's a great, old horse,'' Pride remarked about Private Eye.

"It's a pleasure to train him, he's so tough and is going really well. He will be hard to beat at Caulfield next week.''

Chris Waller's mares, Generosity and Lazzura, were given easy trials behind Apocalyptic.

Earlier, Matcha Latte won a 1000m trial convincingly, defeating Stardom in 59.99 seconds. Cherry Bomshell, who captured the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes, ran a commendable third, just ahead of the Australian Derby victor Green Spaces.

Godolphin's Green Spaces, under Bjorn Baker's training, displayed a strong finish and is on track for the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on August 22.

Idle Flyer, trained by Matthew Smith and winner of the Queen Of The Turf Stakes, had a quiet trial but finished strongly in sixth place, less than two lengths off the winner Matcha Latte.

Idle Flyer is being considered for either the Toy Show Quality or the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) on Winx Stakes Day.

Savvy Hallie, trained by Brad Widdup, dominated the third Group and Listed trial, leading throughout her 900m heat to win by nearly two lengths in 56.09 seconds. El Castello finished second, ahead of Declichy Boulevard, with Berzelius securing fourth.
