Satin Summer set for Melbourne spring campaign
Michael Freedman, based in Sydney, has made the decision to send Satin Summer to Melbourne to compete in the forthcoming sprint races designated for three-year-old fillies.
The campaign begins for Satin Summer at Caulfield on Saturday in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes, a race covering 1100 metres.
Freedman believes that Melbourne offers superior opportunities for sprinting fillies, apart from the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on the following Saturday and the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m), also held at Randwick, two weeks later.
"There's not a lot here (in Sydney)," Freedman said.
"You've got the Silver Shadow and the Furious, and after that there is nothing.
"You go down there (to Melbourne) and basically every second week there is a fillies sprint race."
This will be Satin Summer's fourth start, having debuted with a win at Randwick in January before immediately contesting Stakes races, where she secured fifth place in the Listed Lonhro Plate at Randwick on January 7.
The filly did not race again until July 4, when she finished third at Rosehill over 1100 metres.
Since her last run, Satin Summer has completed a trial at Warwick Farm on August 4, after Freedman opted to scratch her from a couple of prior race engagements.
"She's had one run back and we've scratched off a couple of wide gates the last two times she was in," Freedman explained.
"She trialled at Warwick Farm with the blinkers on and went great and she'll wear them in the Quezette, plus we've got Jamie Melham to ride her."
Satin Summer has been allocated barrier one for her Saturday assignment.
Regarding the possibility of Satin Summer staying in Melbourne after her Saturday run, Freedman commented, "Possibly, if that's the way it pans out."
