Tony Gollan eyes metro races for Precise Star
Precise Star has made a strong impression since joining Tony Gollan's stable, winning both of his starts for his new Queensland owners.
The former Chris Waller-trained gelding didn't quite measure up in Sydney but has since found his stride with victories at the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast.
Although these were maiden and benchmark 58 events, Gollan is convinced he has a horse capable of competing in city races.
The four-year-old's next engagement is The Lawn Shed Class 2 Handicap (1680m) at Ipswich on Wednesday. He will carry 59 kilograms, but apprentice jockey Bella Youngberry's three-kilogram claim will lighten the load.
"I think the mile suits him," Gollan commented. "He comes off a dominant win at Gold Coast so he steps to that midweek grade which I don't think will be too much for him and he has improved."
Youngberry has a solid record, with a 14% winning strike rate and 40% place rate across her 800 rides. Her form for the Gollan stable is even more impressive, with a 26% win rate and 55% placing rate from 38 rides.
"He gets in well with Bella Youngberry's claim and he's the right horse for this race," Gollan elaborated. "There wasn't much we had to do with him after he arrived but he is a nice horse though he does have some quirks. He definitely has metro racing ability."
