Revengeance primed for spring campaign start
Adrian Bott is anticipating a profitable spring carnival outcome from his patient approach with the returning galloper Revengeance, who is set to make his reappearance in the San Domenico Stakes at Rosehill.
The colt was sidelined from the autumn carnival after a knee surgery to remove bone chips, an issue that arose after his victory in the Golden Gift (1100m) in November.
He has undergone a gradual build-up for his return, with the stable opting against an earlier start in the Rosebud (1100m) a fortnight ago, choosing instead to conserve his efforts for Saturday's race.
"We trialled instead. He'd had a long time off and I didn't want to rush him back," Bott explained.
"Plus he would have had to carry a bit of weight with his Golden Gift win. He will be better suited in the San Domenico."
Revengeance has completed three trials in preparation for his comeback, and his most recent performance particularly impressed Bott.
However, the Tulloch Lodge trainer has cautioned that the three-year-old colt will likely perform better over distances beyond 1100m as he targets the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) next month.
"He looks fantastic. He's come back really well and he is stretching out nicely," he commented.
"It might be a bit short for him. I think he'll be a lovely horse as he gets out to 1400 and 1600 metres."
Drawing barrier six in an eight-horse field, Revengeance is expected to follow the traditional path towards the Golden Rose (1400m) via the Run To The Rose (1200m) on September 12.
If all progresses well, connections are also considering a trip to Melbourne for potential runs in races like the Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
Tulloch Lodge has a solid recent record in the San Domenico Stakes, with wins from In The Congo in 2021 and Storm Boy in 2024.
