Pembrey set to back-up strong Silver Shadow Stakes run in Furious Stakes

Leading Brisbane conditioner Tony Gollan is aiming for Pembrey to replicate her dazzling Silver Shadow Stakes performance when she contests the subsequent event of the four-race Princess Series at Randwick.

The three-year-old filly was commanding when leading all the way a fortnight ago. However, with formidable opponents such as the $5.6 million purchase Chayan and Rosebud winner Chilly Girl arriving with fresh form, Gollan is eager for Pembrey to follow up her Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) effort with an equally compelling showing in Saturday's Furious Stakes (1200m).

"She was dominant in that field," Gollan remarked.

"It's undeniable that the competition gets tougher throughout the spring, so we need to present Pembrey at the Furious Stakes in the same or better condition, and hopefully, she can achieve it again. She achieved her peak rating in her first start of her initial preparation, and this is only her second racing campaign.

"We are certainly still discovering her potential, but she exhibits capacity for further advancement. She experienced more tactical cover during her first-up run this time and has recovered well, leading us to anticipate a performance that is at least as good, if not superior." Gollan added, "She 'ratings peaked' her first run of her first 'prep', and it's only her second racing prep. We're obviously still learning with her, but she feels like there is room for improvement. She had more coverage on her this time for her first-up run and she has come through it well, so we're hopeful for an as good, if not better, performance."

Pembrey is installed as the $2.20 favourite to complete a clean sweep of the opening two races in the Princess Series and will be guided by a new jockey.

Tommy Berry assumes riding duties from James McDonald, who had a prior commitment to Chayan. Gollan noted that Berry has a good grasp of the filly's capabilities, despite not having raced her previously.

"He has actually galloped her a couple of times down there already, Pembrey, so he's done me a really good service and it's good to have him on board," Gollan confirmed. "She genuinely thrives at Randwick. Her settling in has been excellent. We transported her there quite early for that initial race, and she has performed flawlessly. Her recovery has been perfect up to this point."

Berry possesses a strong record in the Furious Stakes, having won the race on three occasions with Libertini (2019), Dame Giselle (2020), and Apocalyptic in the previous year.
