Flemington hosts Shockletz's Melbourne Cup bid
A comprehensive 12-month plan is in motion for Shockletz, orchestrated by the Ciaron Maher stable, with hopes of a significant payoff at Flemington.
The esteemed 2026 Melbourne Cup has been a long-term ambition for the daughter of the Cup-winning stallion Shocking.
To be a contender, Shockletz must first earn her spot, and the Maher team is pinning their hopes on Saturday's Group 3 Archer Stakes (2500m) for this crucial step.
The Archer Stakes is a direct pathway, offering the winner an automatic entry into the Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 3, bypassing the need for ballot exemptions.
Flemington will also stage another potential 'Cup qualifier' in The Bart Cummings on October 3, with the Geelong Cup and Moonee Valley Gold Cup later that month also providing ballot exemptions for their winners.
Twelve months prior, Shockletz demonstrated impressive form, achieving four victories with Harry Coffey as her rider.
Her last win in that successful period was in October, with her sole subsequent victory occurring at Pakenham in December.
Coffey is back aboard the mare for Saturday's engagement, and Jack Turnbull, the National Assistant Trainer for Ciaron Maher Racing, has confirmed the application of blinkers.
"We've put some headgear on her," Turnbull explained.
"She travels well, but when they quicken, she's flat-footed, and then she picks up again.
"We are third-up, a mile-and-a-half, essentially, and a bit of headgear, it should play to her favour, plus she likes big tracks and this has been a 12-month plan for her.
"We were conscious of what she did two preps ago and then we freshened her up to be on fresher legs, so that if she does qualify, she has not been taxed come the bigger races."
The Maher stable has a history of success with stayers who compete through the winter before emerging as strong contenders for the Melbourne Cup.
Turnbull highlighted Persan, Grand Promenade, and Berkshire Breeze as examples of horses that have followed this path.
Jennivamoose, another horse from the stable, is also entered for The Archer, having secured a fourth-place finish in the same race last year.
Jennivamoose has raced only twice since, finishing third in both starts at Caulfield, and Turnbull believes the mare will relish the extended distance.
"She ran enormous at Caulfield last time," Turnbull remarked.
"She's had two wide gates this prep and had to go back and made really good ground.
"We're looking forward to her getting out to this trip."
