Winx's third foal arrives at Coolmore Stud

The highly anticipated arrival of Winx's third foal has occurred at Coolmore Stud, with the mare delivering approximately three weeks after her due date, and thankfully, without any complications.

Debbie Kepitis, one of Winx's part-owners, shared with Racing And Sports that the team had been patiently awaiting the birth, which finally took place around 10pm last evening.

"Winx has been overdue with her foals before but we just let nature takes its course,'' Mrs Kepitis said. "But both Winx and her foal are doing really well, it's very exciting.''

Co-owners Peter and Peter Tighe had been staying at Coolmore Stud for five days in hopeful anticipation of the mare foaling. They had, however, left the property yesterday afternoon, missing the actual birth.

"We got home after 8pm and Winx gave birth an hour or two later,'' Peter Tighe told Racing And Sports. "But all that matters is that Winx and her foal are healthy and well, so it's great news. We are already planning to go back to the stud later this week to see Winx but all the reports we are getting from Coolmore is that she has produced a beautiful filly, probably her best foal yet.''

Tom Magnier, the head of Coolmore Stud, conveyed the considerable excitement amongst the staff following the successful delivery.

"It's been a long wait for Winx to have her foal but everything went smoothly last night,'' Magnier said. "Winx is a wonderful 'Mum' and she has produced a very good foal so we are delighted. Winx was born and raised at Coolmore and it is an honour to have her back at the farm as a broodmare.''

This foal is Winx's third, following a Pierro filly purchased by Mrs Kepitis for a record $10 million at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sales two years ago, and a Snitzel colt, currently a two-year-old, who is yet to be named.

The Pierro filly, known as Quincineara, was retired without ever reaching the race track and was recently served by Super Seth. Winx's Snitzel colt, withdrawn from the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale this year, has finished his rehabilitation and is presently engaged in light exercise on a water walker.

Mr Tighe mentioned that the ownership group for Winx will soon convene to deliberate on whether the mare will be served again this spring. It is, however, anticipated that she will be given a period of rest before resuming her breeding duties next year.

Recognised as one of the greatest racehorses in history, Winx secured victory in 37 of her 43 starts, including an unbroken sequence of 33 wins, and holds a world record for 25 Group 1 triumphs. Coached by Chris Waller, her remarkable career included four Cox Plates, four George Ryder Stakes, three Queen Elizabeth Stakes, three George Main Stakes, a Doncaster Mile, and an Epsom Handicap, leading to her induction into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame with Legend status.
