Charm Stone set for another Manikato Stakes attempt
A considerable amount of time has passed since Charm Stone last claimed the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley.
The mare, prepared by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, triumphed in last year's race at The Valley first-up and is now set to compete in this year's Group 1 1200m sprint at Caulfield on Sunday, aiming to add it to her collection.
This year's running of the Manikato Stakes has been shifted to Caulfield while Moonee Valley's circuit undergoes renovations.
Blake Shinn, who guided Charm Stone to a commanding victory last year, has elected to ride Geegees Mistruth on Sunday, despite partnering the mare in two recent trials at Cranbourne.
Damian Lane is scheduled to take the mount on Charm Stone.
Charm Stone has not competed since her narrow third-place finish in the Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville in April, after which plans for a trip to Royal Ascot were shelved.
Price mentioned that the prospect of competing at Royal Ascot next year remains a viable option for Charm Stone, provided her performances in the upcoming spring and autumn campaigns justify it.
"She had an entrapped epiglottis," Price stated.
"I told Seamus (Mills) that I wouldn't take the chance of going to Royal Ascot, as she is a lovely mare and far too valuable. I know the owners are eager for Royal Ascot, and she hasn't been over-raced; if she is happy and healthy, why not consider it for next year. She ran in the Sangster with that condition, and she was narrowly beaten, but I believe she can return to her best form. The entrapped epiglottis is the least of the procedures, and her throat is now perfect. She's a beautiful mare, in good condition."
During last year's Manikato victory, Charm Stone drew barrier two and experienced a perfect race run.
This year, the situation is different from barrier 11, but Price considers Caulfield to be a better track than The Valley for a horse drawn wide.
"I don't see any negatives with that," Price remarked.
"The 1200 metres is a suitable starting point. The chute offers a fair track, and typically, all horses get a chance, especially over 1200 metres."
