Genesis Runner set to break through in Dulcify Stakes
With two respectable Group race placings to his name, Genesis Runner is due for a stakes victory, and this Saturday offers an excellent opportunity.
The Yulong-owned three-year-old colt is an early favourite for the Listed Dulcify Stakes (1600m) at Randwick this Saturday, having been kept fresh after connections bypassed last weekend's Golden Rose (1400m) to target this longer race.
His prior start saw him finish fourth, closing strongly behind Persian Wonder in the Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m). For the Dulcify Stakes, he will be equipped with blinkers for the first time, a move co-trainer Will Freedman hopes will help him convert his consistent form into a win.
"He was good last time, but he needs to get a run on the board soon at that level," Freedman explained. "He can't consistently be a bridesmaid, so there is a bit of pressure on him for that. But he's come through the run very well. He should be a very good chance."
If Genesis Runner performs as anticipated, his campaign will likely continue along the traditional route towards the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) on October 24, with the Gloaming Stakes (1800m) scheduled for two weeks after Saturday serving as a potential lead-up.
Freedman believes the colt's recent efforts indicate a preference for increased distances.
"Over 1400 he's been left a bit flat-footed. He's looking like a horse who wants to get over further and further," he commented.
By leading US stallion Gun Runner, Genesis Runner was acquired for $575,000 at last year's Inglis Easter Sale.
He was listed as the $2.80 favourite for the Dulcify Stakes on Wednesday and will be partnered by jockey Chad Schofield from barrier four.
