General Salute poised for another home track triumph

Since his juvenile racing days, General Salute has almost exclusively competed in stakes races. Although it took him some time to achieve victory at this level, he has now found his stride.

The gelding has been placed seven times in black-type events, breaking his maiden status in the 2025 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m). This year, he has added significant feature race wins to his record, including the Winter Stakes (1400m) and the Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m).

His connections have demonstrated remarkable patience and perseverance, maintaining faith in the horse as he battled foot problems earlier in his career.

"He's had his issues over the years, but the owners are very patient, and they've always known he's a quality galloper with his fair share of ability," co-trainer Sterling Alexiou explained.

"There has never been any pressure on us to ever put any pressure on the horse."

"We've let him slowly build through the grades. He's up over the $1 million mark (in prizemoney) now, which is the bees' knees for a homebred."

General Salute is set to pursue further major race success in Saturday's Alan Brown Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill, a race in which he finished third 12 months ago.

The previous year's first and second placegetters, Headley Grange and Gringotts respectively, will be among his rivals. Seasoned competitor Private Eye and the talented Linebacker are also expected to feature.

Alexiou admits the field is formidable, but with a favourable draw in barrier four and having secured his first win on a firmer track last start, he is confident General Salute will be a strong contender.

"It was his first win on a good track the other day, so it was good to see him tick that box," he remarked.

"It looks a hot sort of race. He'll have to go to another level, but he's draw well, and I imagine he'll get a good run in the race."

"He knows nothing but to give his all and he's a horse who fills you with a fair bit of confidence that when things go right, he always shows up."

On Thursday, the Victorian-trained Sepals was the $5 favourite for the Alan Brown Stakes, with General Salute rated as one of the leading contenders at $9.50.

Lady Shenandoah and Warnie have been scratched and will instead contest the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield.
