Waller's promising fillies shine at Rosehill

Filly Affari has shed her maiden status in impressive fashion, securing a dominant all-the-way victory at Rosehill after five previous minor placings in her first six starts.

Jockey James McDonald highlighted the impact of blinkers in helping the three-year-old achieve her long-awaited win in Wednesday's Inglis Xtra Bonus Plate (1200m), suggesting she has the capacity to advance through the racing grades.

"She has been promising that," McDonald said. "She goes really well. She's just, for some unknown reason, always found one better but they've all been good horses to be fair. Blinkers on definitely worked wonders today. That was a masterstroke and hopefully she can go on."

Affari, a $370,000 Magic Millions purchase for Denise Martin's Star Thoroughbreds and a daughter of exciting young stallion Home Affairs, was competing for the fifth time this campaign. Her prior starts included four consecutive second placings, but trainer Chris Waller's stable representative, Darren Beadman, indicated that her preparation might extend further given her strong finish.

"Chris is a great judge with that," Beadman commented. "But when they win like that and they hit the line with purpose like she did, more times than not they come out of that, and they'll butter up next time."

Waller and McDonald later combined for success with another promising filly, Ballet D'Light, who made a winning debut in the MyRacehorse Handicap (1100m) two races later.

Beadman noted that the I Am Invincible filly, who had participated in five trials, had been a project but was now starting to put all her qualities together.

"They've been very patient with her. She's a little bit special," Beadman explained. "James did a lovely job rating the speed and she showed a nice turn of foot."

The formidable Waller-McDonald combination is set to contest two of the Sydney spring's premier races at Randwick on Saturday, fielding Joliestar in the $20 million Everest (1200m) and Autumn Glow in the $5 million King Charles III Stakes (1600m).
