Yearlings confirmed as victims of mystery illness
A mysterious illness affecting horses in Victoria has claimed the lives of at least two thoroughbred yearlings, while several other young horses are exhibiting symptoms of the unknown condition.
Nea Clark from Kyark Thoroughbreds reported the loss of two young stock in the past five weeks, and additional two-year-olds are currently displaying similar puzzling symptoms.
The illness appears to only affect the yearlings and rising two-year-olds, sparing the broodmare band on Clark’s Narre Warren property.
Despite extensive efforts to identify the cause, including tests for poisons and toxins, the source of the illness remains unknown.
The condition does not appear to be contagious, as it has not spread throughout the entire horse population.
Agriculture Victoria has been notified and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the illness and deaths.
Meanwhile, Clark and her team at Kyark Thoroughbreds are shouldering significant financial burdens due to mounting veterinary bills and have been forced to relocate some mares and foals for care.
As the investigation continues, the equestrian community anxiously awaits answers regarding this perplexing and devastating horse illness.
