Ceolwulf ready to take on big guns in G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes
Ceolwulf faces his biggest challenge yet in Saturday’s $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes, where he aims to prove he can match it with Australia’s elite over 2000 metres.
The talented miler will line up against a world-class group featuring Cox Plate champion Via Sistina, European contenders Dubai Honour and Rousham Park, Australian Cup winner Light Infantry Man, and Melbourne Cup fancy Vauban.
Ceolwulf’s spring saw him land the Epsom Handicap and King Charles III Stakes double. However, his current preparation was delayed due to missing the Verry Elleegant Stakes, leading to a disrupted lead-up.
Following two below-par runs, he bounced back with a workmanlike win in the Neville Sellwood Stakes. While not overly impressive, his trainer Joe Pride believes it was a necessary step in the horse’s campaign.
“There has been a lot said about his run,” Pride said.
“There are a few things, and it normally is a combination of things, there’s not normally one answer to any question in racing.
