Magic Millions National 2YO Classic trip on the line for debutant

Connections of first-starter Prince Tycoon have set their sights on Queensland’s big two-year-old prize, but his Caulfield debut will need to impress for that dream to become reality.

Trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young have entered the colt in Saturday’s Next Payments Handicap (1100m), aiming to qualify him for the $1 million Magic Millions National 2YO Classic (1000m) on May 23.

He was withdrawn from a midweek assignment due to a wide draw, but now enjoys a kinder alley in gate two and a more appealing prizemoney pool.

“We knew he’d have a hard run from out wide and wouldn’t get close to a horse like Frostnip,” said Young. “This race is a better fit all around.”

With three rivals already scratched, Prince Tycoon faces a compact field of seven, including four other debutants.

“He’s a smart type and one we didn’t pay a lot for,” Young added. “He’s looked sharp at the trials and we’ve got good hopes for him.”

Jockey Daniel Moor maintains the partnership after steering the colt to a jump-out win at Cranbourne, with the pair hoping to repeat that form under race conditions.

A successful showing could prompt a quick turnaround, with the colt likely bound for the Gold Coast should he pick up enough prizemoney.

“This run is key — if he performs, we’re definitely looking to head north,” Young said.
