Jockey Andrew Adkins making hay while winter sun shines

Former champion apprentice Andrew Adkins has been making the most of his chances this winter, notching another city double at Rosehill as he builds momentum in Sydney racing.
Adkins was successful aboard Motoscafo for John Thompson in the Midway Handicap (1200m) before steering Freight Train home in the TAB Handicap (2000m) for Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.
The double follows up a winning brace at Rosehill two weeks earlier, which included a memorable win in the Listed Lord Mayors Cup (2000m) aboard Touristic and a victory on King’s Secret.
With several of Sydney’s top riders currently focused on Brisbane’s winter carnival, Adkins has found more opportunities opening up in the metro ranks and is determined to capitalise.
“Any winners are good winners but obviously in town, especially on a Saturday, is much better,” Adkins said.
“I’m getting good support which I am thankful for and I’ve just got to try to execute off the back of that.
“Things are good. I’ve had a bit of success lately and that certainly helps you gain a bit of confidence.”
While he made his mark as Sydney’s champion apprentice in 2016-17, Adkins has more recently been seen on the provincial circuit. His latest city double lifts his metropolitan season tally to nine, alongside 58 wins statewide.
Having previously partnered Motoscafo to victory at Newcastle, Adkins used that experience to replicate a winning formula.
“She had a really good turn of foot late at Newcastle that day and I wanted to ride her similarly, get to the outside and get her to rocket home,” he said.
“She is always strong late if afforded the right opportunities.
“I rode her at on the ‘Kenso’ (Kensington track) a couple back and tried to ride her forward and she didn’t like that.”
Motoscafo’s win was her third from ten starts, and she continues to uphold the strong family form of half-siblings Tristate and Blazing Miss—both multiple stakes performers.
