2025 Caulfield Cup on McEvoy’s mind after stayer impresses

Emerging stayer Half Yours took a significant step forward on Saturday, capturing the Listed Caloundra Cup and putting himself on the radar for a spring tilt at the Caulfield Cup.

Trainer Tony McEvoy has campaigned the gelding across Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland this preparation, and the planning has paid off with a commanding victory at 2400 metres.

“He’s a horse we sourced and purchased and thought he was the right article and he showed that today that he’s the horse we’d hoped for,” McEvoy said.

“He looks to have a bright staying future.”

Half Yours, sent out as the $3.50 favourite, put his rivals to the sword with a 4½-length win over Bear On The Loose, with Felix The Scat rounding out the placings.

“The whole idea was to come here and get his rating up so we can target some races in the spring,” McEvoy said post-race. “He’s achieved that now so we’ll back off him and have a spell.”

Rider Ash Morgan echoed that excitement: “He’s a proper, proper horse and he got into a nice spot and switched off for me.”

“His strength is that he relaxes really well in the run and has an explosive turn-of-foot. He put them to bed.”

The duo also found success with Mr Verse earlier in the meeting, capping a stellar afternoon.
