Open sesame for Alibaba after 2026 Blue Diamond Stakes Preview breakthrough
Alibaba’s impressive victory in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview has left Ken and Kasey Keys weighing up whether to press on toward the Group 1 feature.
The colt was not initially entered for the Blue Diamond Stakes, but his Caulfield performance has put him firmly on the radar.
“He has really settled down this prep,” Kasey said.
“He wasn’t the easiest early on but he has been gaining confidence every day.
“We’ve always known that he has the motor but it has just been a matter of him putting it together.”
An alternative path could see Alibaba head to Sydney for the $2 million Inglis Millennium (1100m) at Randwick.
Craig Newitt was full of praise following the win.
“He handled everything like an absolute professional,” Newitt said.
“He began well and once he got a half-length in front he wandered around a little bit but next time I think if we ride him a bit more conservative then you’ll see his big finish.”
The son of CF Orr Stakes winner Alabama Express had earlier placed in the Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m).
He stopped the clock in 58.70 seconds when edging out Milsons Point, with Invicto unlucky after being hampered late.
Alibaba is currently listed at $15 in early markets for the Blue Diamond Stakes.
