Sandpaper leads home stable quinella in 2026 Carrington Stakes

Sandpaper continued his strong preparation with a gutsy front-running victory in the Listed Carrington Stakes at Randwick, giving Bjorn Baker another feature success.
Ridden with confidence by Nash Rawiller, the gelding controlled the race from the front and dug deep late to hold off stablemate Thunderlips, with Matcha Latte finishing close up in third.
The six-year-old was coming off a solid effort in The Buffering (1400m), a run that gave the stable confidence heading into Saturday’s contest.
“He was really tough in Brisbane. He never got any peace and had pressure the whole way, but he stuck on well,” Luke Hilton said.
“Bjorn just gave him that little bit of extra time and he came back in great order.
“His work had been excellent and Nash rides him really well.”
Rawiller completed a treble on the day and admitted the finish was closer than he would have liked.
“He’s a tough bugger,” Rawiller said.
“They came at him hard, but he just keeps finding. He’s very genuine.
“When they got to him late, he really dug in and refused to let them past.”
Sandpaper has now claimed his second stakes win for the stable, adding to his Group 3 success in the Newcastle Stakes (1400m) last year.
