Hidrix equal Golden Slipper Stakes 2026 favourite after a dominant debut

Posted by RS NewsWire at 5:16pm on January 31st

Chris Waller has unveiled another serious Golden Slipper contender after Hidrix produced a commanding debut performance at Rosehill.

The colt stamped himself as a major player for the world’s richest two-year-old race as favourite Incognito failed to fire, finishing well down the order.

Incognito’s jockey Tommy Berry reported the colt may have suffered a breathing issue during the race.

“He made a gargling noise pulling up, so he’s obviously flicked his palate,” Berry said.

“The team at home can work out how they fix that.”

Following the result, bookmakers eased Incognito to $26 for the Golden Slipper while Hidrix moved to equal favourite alongside Warwoven.

Waller dominated the finish, with Confederation filling second and Eviction Notice holding third.

Hidrix, a $1.7 million yearling and full brother to Apocalyptic, showed the same natural talent that made his sibling a star.

Waller said the colt had always impressed despite minor doubts early on.

“He was out of the Coolmore draft and by Extreme Choice. He ticked all the boxes,” Waller said.

“The only thing we weren’t sure about was the colour, but we’ve got nothing to worry about now.

“We’ve given him two easy trials and haven’t asked much of him.”

Plans are now in place to head toward the Golden Slipper with both Waller runners still on the rise.

“They’re still improving and that’s the exciting part,” Waller said.

Winning rider Zac Lloyd praised the colt’s professionalism.

“He’s bombproof and very easy to ride,” Lloyd said.

“He’s extremely push-button.”

Freedman later confirmed Incognito would be scoped but expected him to return within weeks.

With betting markets already reacting strongly, racegoers can monitor the latest odds via leading online bookmakers.
