Chilly Girl races into Golden Slipper Stakes 2026 with Widden Stakes win

Posted by RS NewsWire at 5:16pm on January 31st

Chilly Girl showed her toughness and talent when leading all the way to claim the Widden Stakes at Rosehill, producing a performance full of grit.

Despite being pressured early by favourite Miss Scandal, the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained filly refused to yield and found plenty in the straight to hold off Miss Chanel.

Her time of 1:03.82 was quicker than the colts’ division of the Canonbury Stakes, further enhancing the merit of the win.

Alexiou was thrilled with the way the filly handled herself under pressure.

“She had to work early and then find again late, which isn’t easy for a first-starter,” he said.

“She’s very tough and very professional.”

The trainer admitted he briefly feared the early tempo may have told late but was impressed by her determination.

“She just kept finding. That’s a great sign moving forward,” he said.

Chilly Girl will now be aimed toward the Golden Slipper, with Alexiou keen to monitor how she comes through her debut.

“She’s at the top of our two-year-olds right now,” he said.

“If she keeps progressing, she’ll get her chance.”

The filly has firmed to $11 in early Slipper markets behind Warwoven and Hidrix, with odds available through leading betting agencies.

Miss Scandal weakened in the closing stages and will now head to the spelling paddock, according to trainer Chris Waller.
