Taylor Marshall celebrates maiden Group One win in Stradbroke Handicap

In a memorable moment, Taylor Marshall has secured his inaugural Group One victory in Queensland's most prestigious race, the Stradbroke Handicap, echoing his late father John Marshall's success nearly four decades prior.

Piloting the Toby Edmonds-trained Spicy Martini ($13), Marshall steered the mare to a gripping triumph in the $3 million Eagle Farm feature race on Saturday. She powerfully emerged from the field to win by a length over the closing Sepals ($31), with Von Hauke ($41) securing third place a further three-quarters of a length adrift.

Having embarked on his riding career in 2013, Marshall's previous biggest achievement was at Group 3 level. As Spicy Martini took the lead, he pondered the advice his renowned father might have imparted.

"I was thinking of Dad saying, 'patient, patient'. But what a thrill," Marshall stated. "Every jockey needs that one horse to put them on the map, so to speak, and I'm hoping she's that one."

"She has already proven to jag a Group One, and not only a Group One, but Queensland's most prestigious race. I'm lost for words."

John Marshall, a distinguished jockey who was a regular partner for Bart Cummings, guided Rogan Josh to victory in the 1999 Melbourne Cup. His two Stradbroke Handicap wins aboard Campaign King and Robian Steele, both in 1989, were also achieved for the legendary trainer.

The elder Marshall sadly passed away in December 2018, aged 60.

Spicy Martini has proven a remarkable find for trainer Toby Edmonds, who purchased her online for just $8000. She boasts six wins from twelve starts and has amassed close to $2.7 million in prize money.

This win marked Edmonds' second Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) title. He expressed his delight in this achievement, noting that his first victory with Tyzone in 2020 occurred during the challenging period of the Covid outbreak.

"To win it twice is big. It's big for me. I'm sixty years of age now, I don't know how many more years of training I've got to go," Edmonds revealed. "I'll tell you one thing, you give me a horse like this, I'll win another one too."

Despite the challenging heavy track conditions, the top mare Fangirl showed great determination to finish fourth. Jockey James McDonald considered her performance one of the highlights of her career.

"She always runs her heart out, but today under trying circumstance she was superb," McDonald remarked. "I thought it was one of the better runs of her career. She doesn't really handle it (heavy track), but she had the audacity to fight on."

Chris Waller, Fangirl's trainer, indicated earlier this week that the mare would continue racing next season, potentially commencing with the Winx Stakes (1400m) in August.
