General Salute conquers fitness battles to win Winter Stakes

The persistent foot issues that have hampered General Salute throughout his racing career were finally put aside at Rosehill as the five-year-old delivered a strong performance to capture the Listed Winter Stakes.
His co-trainer, Gerald Ryan, explained the extent of the gelding's ailments, noting they have been present since his early days. A year-long spell followed his last-place finish in the 2024 Hawkesbury Guineas due to a foot problem, only for a different issue to emerge upon his return.
"He had an operation on his foot as a foal and we've had heaps of trouble with it," Ryan revealed. "He kept getting quarter cracks. When he had that long break (after the Guineas), we cut all his foot away and turned him out to let it grow out. He came back, then after he ran at Randwick he chipped a joint and had to have surgery. He's had problems all his life, so it was good to see the horse do that."
Regardless of his physical challenges, General Salute has been a consistent performer and a significant earner for his owners. While his win in Saturday's Winter Stakes (1400m) was his first in over a year, he has consistently placed in the top three in eight of his last nine outings. He has previously shown his class when competing against horses like Autumn Glow in the 2024 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) and Headley Grange in the Alan Brown Stakes (1400m).
"He won nearly $400,000 last time in without winning a race," Ryan added.
The only recent blemish on General Salute's record was his ninth in the Civic Stakes (1400m), a run Ryan attributed to an overly ambitious step-up in distance from his 1100m first-up effort.
"It was probably my fault for doing that. He should have had a shorter race in the meantime," he admitted. "Because he was so fresh, we stuck the work into him more than we would normally do since then and, older horse, he's copped it good."
Ridden by Tim Clark, the $8.50 chance General Salute maintained a determined run along the inside to beat Mchale ($10) by a length, with Midnight Dynamite ($4.80) finishing in third.
General Salute returned excellent value for punters at $8.50 according to leading Aussie betting sites, while Mchale and Midnight Dynamite also featured prominently in betting apps Australia markets. The connections will monitor the gelding's condition post-victory to decide if he will contest the Winter Challenge (1500m) at Rosehill on July 18.
